  3. Staying healthy and fit is indeed a life long journey. Although I I always walked a lot, and have never been overweight, I only took up proper exercise classes when I was in my mid sixties, by joining a bootcamp group.

Do you have specific tips for women in their sixties? Should I be incorporating weight training as part of my exercise regime? I have heard that working with weights can increase bone density, which is essential for older women. And if I am training with weights, how often should I be doing weight training? Thank you.

    • Hi LineCowley,

Thank you for your message and for sharing your journey towards a healthier and fitter lifestyle. It’s wonderful to hear that you’ve embraced proper exercise classes and joined a bootcamp group in your mid-sixties. Your proactive approach to staying active is truly inspiring.

For women in their sixties, incorporating weight training into your exercise regime is indeed a beneficial move, especially when it comes to increasing bone density. As we age, maintaining bone health becomes crucial to prevent osteoporosis and other related conditions, and strength training is a powerful tool in this regard. In addition to its bone-strengthening benefits, weight training can also help improve muscle mass, balance, and overall functional fitness, which are essential for an active and independent lifestyle.

Here are a few tips specifically tailored for women in their sixties considering weight training:

Start Slowly: If you’re new to weight training, begin with lighter weights and gradually increase the weight or resistance level as your strength improves.Focus on Form: Proper technique is crucial to prevent injuries. Consider working with a personal trainer who can guide you on the correct form.Frequency: Aim for at least two non-consecutive days per week of strength training. This schedule allows your muscles to recover and rebuild between sessions.Include Major Muscle Groups: Ensure your routine targets all major muscle groups, including legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms, for a balanced approach.Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body responds to weight training. If something feels wrong, stop and seek professional advice.

Your interest in enhancing your health and fitness is commendable, LineCowley. By including weight training in your regime, you’re taking a significant step towards improving your bone density, strength, and overall well-being. Remember, it’s never too late to start, and every step forward is a victory in the journey towards a healthier, fitter life.

      Best regards,

      Gary
